“Help Im anxious and overstimulated!” - Navigating Anxiety in Today’s World
Hello, fellow anxiety warriors. If you’re reading this, you’ve likely felt that familiar knot in your stomach while facing the demands of everyday life and praying for some reprieve (often while doom scrolling). You’re not alone! Anxiety is a common experience, especially in today’s world.
Why Are We So Anxious These Days?
Let’s explore some key reasons why anxiety seems to be more prevalent now than ever:
1. Information Overload
In our digital age, news arrives at lightning speed. With constant updates on social media, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. And not only that, but it is easier then ever for others to get ahold of us with teams, widgets, texts “oh my!” The barrage of information can lead to heightened feelings of anxiety, especially when your brain can only process so much at a time, and the emotions that come with each message.
2. Comparison Culture
Social media, reality shows and even real life friends, or co-workers often fosters a culture of comparison, where we measure our lives against the seemingly perfect highlights of others. This can undermine our self-esteem, making us feel like we are doing life wrong, or not enough and contribute to anxiety, or existential dread.
3. Economic Pressures
Financial stress is a significant source of anxiety for many, especially living in the US, with inflation and house prices being what they are right now. You may be in a house living comfortably with a solid retirement and portfolio, but the constant message still might be a cloud overhead.
4. Uncertainty of the Future
The unpredictability of global events—such as health crises, AI and political instability—can create an environment of constant uncertainty, amplifying feelings of anxiety. Because after all anxiety is largely based on the fear of the unknown or perceived danger.
5. Personal Expectations
For many women, the pressure to juggle multiple roles can be overwhelming. Balancing children’s needs, managing emotions, and striving to avoid mistakes—like missing a soccer match or saying the wrong thing during a tough conversation—can lead to significant stress. Add to that the aspiration to climb the career ladder, pursue financial goals, or finally start that dream business, and it’s no wonder anxiety can feel like an ever-present companion. The stimulation and emotional processing that goes with it can be too much at times.
What Can Help?
While anxiety can feel overwhelming, there are effective strategies to address it:
1. Mindfulness and Meditation
I know it can sound “woo woo,” but hear me out. Practicing mindfulness can help ground you in the present and reduce anxious thoughts, because we feel more comfortable when we are in control. And we tend to have more control or ability to make choices and changes when in the present rather than the future. Consider using apps like Headspace or Calm to get started with voice navigated practices.. Start with 5 to 10 min a day. *preferably not in the car. eek
2. Physical Activity
Exercise releases endorphins, which can improve your mood. Regular physical activity—whether a brisk walk or a workout—can be beneficial. Also this helps with a little chemical called BDNF that helps us with motivation and looking positively about activities in the future.
3. Connect with Others
Reach out to friends or family even if for a phone call while doing chores or walking . Sharing your feelings and experiences can lighten the emotional load. And remember it is not quantity here, we are all about quality.
4. Seek Professional Support
A therapist or life coach can provide valuable strategies and tools tailored to your needs, but more importantly you feel less alone in the struggle. Plus some anxiety has deeper roots that might need to be explored. Professional support can help you navigate your feelings and shift your everyday mindset.
5. Limit Social Media
I know we all know this, like knowing we should floss or eat more whole foods, but we don’t always do it. But I am saying it anyways…Taking breaks from social media can help reduce comparison and information overload, contributing to better mental health.
6. Create a Routine
Establishing a daily routine can provide a sense of control and stability in your life. Start with Anchor points in the morning or evening. This is especially helpful if you are neurodivergent as everyday life is overwhelming.
7. Practice Self-Compassion
The most important one always no exceptions! It’s important to recognize that it’s okay not to be okay. Being gentle with yourself can help you navigate through challenging times. A lot of us are taxed to the max, mentally, and every which way these days. You are in good company and it is okay that your not perfect or always mentally balanced.
Conclusion: Embracing the Journey
Navigating anxiety and overstimulation in today's world is a challenge many face, but you don’t have to do it alone. Embrace the journey with compassion and seek support from friends, family, or professionals. Remember, reaching out for assistance is a sign of strength, and it’s perfectly okay to ask for help especially since I bet you are helping everyone else much of the time. You need a you in your corner.
Take a moment to breathe, reflect, and know that you are not alone in this journey. 🌼
